The Uncomfortable Truth

We can never make everyone happy — and we shouldn’t

It’s commonplace to feel like you are not enough. We have all gone through insecurities and that seed of doubt could have been planted by anyone and anything — experiences, people around us, and people who do not even know our story.

The uncomfortable truth is that we can never make everyone in our lives happy, and we shouldn’t be striving for that either, because it ultimately means that we ourselves are unhappy.

We wear multiple hats in life with various responsibilities and social protocols, and I think it’s important to recognize that and understand its implications. For example, you could be a son or daughter, an employee, a colleague, a friend, a niece, a cousin, someone’s partner, a community volunteer for a few places, and perhaps own a few dogs. Not forgetting the dozens and hundreds of strangers we bump into while using the public transport — of course I’m hoping I didn’t leave a negative impression on people I do not know.

If I’m interviewing for a new job, I’m a potential new hire for the company, but I’m also someone leaving an impression for possible future opportunities. If I have a LinkedIn profile or any social media profiles, I’m very literally what I post online, because for some, that’s the version of me that they know…
